Alix loves Grandpa. She
loves his boat. She loves their days on the bay. She
looks over the water. Too bad—no manatees.
Grandpa
slows the boat. It stops. Alix
and Grandpa fish. They see birds. They see dolphins. But still no manatees.
Alix spots
big gray blobs. “Manatees!” The
boat floats closer. Two
manatees play. One does not. He has deep cuts on his back.
“What’s
wrong?” Alix asks. “A boat
hit him,” says Grandpa. “Someone didn’t look out for manatees.” Grandpa
calls for help.
A rescue boat comes. The hurt manatee is going to a place to get better. Alix and Grandpa head home.
Another boat speeds past. “Slow
down,” calls Alix. “Look out for manatees!”
